An Antique Mid/Late Victorian Light Brown Linen, Lace and Cane Handled Pagoda-Shaped Parasol dating to the late 1870s or 1880s

Description

No respectable Victorian lady would have left the house without carrying a fashionable parasol (see the fashion prints at the end of the photos showing parasols dating to the 1880s). The shape of the handle is very distinct and was particular popular in the late 1870s and more so even in the 1880s. Pagoda-shaped parasols are rare in the 1870s and 1880s, they were most popular in the 1830s and 1840s.
This parasol has a cane handle and a light brown coloured linen or cotton cover with a tasseled machinemade filet lace border (almost certainly a later addition or an addition by the original owner, the parasol would have been originally retailed without the lace). The lace shows vines and grapes. The cover is machine sewn with the lace handstitched on. The internal workings are made of black painted brass. The parasol ends in a metal tipped cane finial.
The parasol measures 29.5\" long and ca. 25\" wide when fully open.
The parasol is in good usable condition, but I would remove or replace the rather ugly lace (at the very least it needs to be washed). The handle is in good condition, but sadly the lower metal spring that held the parasol fully shut when closed is missing (see photos). The cover has a small hole and two further tiny ones and is rather grubby (see photos). I also noticed wear around the spring near the finial (this spring facilitated the pagoda-shape (see last photo ).

The parasol will be shipped in a box. Postage to the UK via Regular Airmail will cost £6.30, within Europe via Airmail £6.30 (ca. 7.50 Euro), overseas via Airmail £9.00 (ca. US$15.00).
