Rare miniature book with Stirling Silver front cover,

POETICAL WORKS OF ALFRED LORD TENNYSON.

Published by Eyre & Spottiswoode, London.

There is no printed published year, however a previous owner inscription on one of the first blank pages is dated 1905.

The front cover is a thin plate of hallmarked Stirling Silver. This has a raised portrait of Tennyson, with his date of birth 1809 and date of death 1892. This book appears to have been produced shortly after his death.

The British hallmark is WC, followed by K, followed by a lion symbol and what appears to be a shield symbol. We cannot confirm any information regarding the maker etc.

The book is miniature, measuring 5cm x 5.5cm, and is 2cm thick.

There are some signs of age, use and wear. The Silver cover is worn, rubbed and discoloured, giving it an appealing patina. There is a slight tear at the bottom left where it attaches to the spine. The spine and back cover both show fading and wear. There is some occasional age related page discolouration/creasing dotted throughout. All text is clearly legible. Overall contents binding is tight and complete, however partial delicate loosening is clearly developing in parts. This includes the first few blank pages being attached to the spine, but not to the bulk of the contents, and delicate loosening at the centre of the contents between pages 414-415. There is a previous owner inscription on one of the first blank pages. The page edges are gold gilded with a red tint, and also show some wear. An overall interesting collectible and rare edition.
