Ex Libris Monroe Wheeler/Anatole PohorilenkoMonroe Wheeler (1899-1988),former Director of Exhibitions and Publications at The Museum of Modern Art (1939-1967) and a personal friend of John Szarkowski,was born in Evanston, Illinois. In the 1920s, before his long and active career at the Museum, Wheeler worked and lived in France, co-founding the publishing firm Harrison of Paris.His relationship with longtime companion Glenway Wescott lasted from 1919 until Wescott\'s death in 1987.Glenway Wescott (1901-1987) was an American novelist during the 1920s and 1930s and a figure in the American expatriate literary community in Paris during the 1920s.Wheeler\'s relationship with the photographer George Platt Lynes began in 1927 and the three lived and travelled together until GPL\'s death in 1955. The triangular relationship was documented and beautifully told in the book, When We Were Three (Arena Editions, 1998), written by Anatole Pohorilenko.
