THE SAILOR\'S SON

A Chip Off The Old Block

by Edward Killingworth Johnson

- Made in 1881 -

This great antique color lithograph, titled \"A Chip of the Old Block,\" was created by British artist E. K. Johnson and printed in the year 1881. This is a wonderful Victorian image, a young boy dressed in a sailor\'s suit being shown an image of his father hanging on the wall.

Note: By the end of the nineteenth century, this expression had evolved into the one we are more familiar with today, \"a chip OFF the old block.\"

Is his father away serving his country on the high seas, or has he perhaps perished in some terrible nautical disaster? Indeed, whether or not the gentleman in the painting which the young boy is being shown is a man of the sea is a matter of conjecture. But what is certain is that this image is a very personal one for the artist, E. K. Johnson, who had be orphaned himself when he was only a young boy. Moreover, the models for this beautiful artistic image were his wife, Hannah, and two of his three children.

Edward Killingworth Johnson (1825-1896) was a renowned English artist, engraver and illustrator during the Victorian Era. Orphaned at the age of ten, Edward undertook an apprenticeship in wood engraving, serving as an assistant to a pair of men who were commissioned to provide engravings to the newly-established Illustrated London News. After his apprenticeship, he illustrated several books, but his primary work was serving as an engraver and illustrator for the Illustrated London News. As his career progressed, Edward continued to work for this illustrated journal, but like many of his contemporaries, he also illustrated other weekly and monthly magazines.By the 1860s, Johnson had become well known as an artist, engraver and illustrator, and his career as a water color painter had begun to flourish. His success was attributed not only to his great talent, but also to his ability to produce paintings reflecting the spirit of the age, images which could also be easily reproduced in the illustrated journals and magazines which had begun to flourish. In November 1871 Edward married and following this, he and his new wife Hannah left London for the countryside, where they lived for a decade and a half and had three children. In 1869 a new illustrated magazine,The Graphic, had been formed to rival the Illustrated London News, and Edward Johnson undertook to provide illustrations for that journal as well, with his pen name at that publication from 1874-1889 being \"Our Country Artist.\" During his period in the country, many of Johnson\'s most successful works featured his wife and children. Edward and his family left country living to return to London in 1886, where he continued his water color painting and providing illustrations for publications. Edward Killingworth Johnson died on April 11, 1896.

SIZE: This classic Victorian-era lithograph measures approximately 15 inches by 11 inches, including margins,

CONDITION: This classic lithograph, over a century and a quarter old, is in excellent condition - there are no imperfections of any kind, the paper is clean and white and the coloring is superb! (Although unfortunately this does not show at all well in the scans.)

This Victorian lithographic print is an original - it was made 135 years ago and guaranteed to be authentic, and not a later reprint or any other type of reproduction!
This early full-color lithograph was made during an era when images in the illustrated journals were strictly black-and-white wood engravings. Then, just a few years before this image was made, several British journals began to distribute full-color lithographs in one or two issues a year (work on these had to be begun months in advance, and very often their production had to be contracted out to one of the few firms capable of producing the quality of colored images needed). This beautiful lithograph was distributed in a special holiday Supplement to The Graphic over a century and a quarter ago.
