Tiffany & Co 1936 NYAC Sterling Silver Enamel Golf Trophy Cigar Jewelry Box :
$899.99

Tiffany & Co. very rare 925 sterling silver and enamel golf trophy presentation box from 1936. Box measures 7in x 2in x 3.25in. This New York Athletic Club Winged Foot Trophy cigar humidor box was presented to William \"Bill\" McCarthy, who was also the well known baseball coach at NYU from 1922 to 1961. I have added more information about Coach McCarthy below. The box is in very good condition for its age, with no major dings, dents, or scratches, though it does have a very light corner mark, bottom front left, and very light wear corresponding with an 80 yr old piece. However, it did have a lot of tarnish, but no corrosion. I took before (below) and after (above) photos of the box, I somewhat lightly cleaned the sides, and top around the inscription, but I did not clean bottom, inscription, interior or enamel at all- I used a mild solution of baking soda and water, which I use to clean all my sterling Tiffany when I clean it. There is also a chip at the top on one of the enamel flowers. Wood lined inside (cedar, I believe), interior top has residue of some sort, again, I did not try to clean that. I will leave the rest of the cleaning to the new owner, should they choose to do so. It is by no means minty, obviously, it is dirty and has wear commensurate with age, but it is a beautiful piece of Tiffany silver with an amazing history and provenance. How can you beat historical ties to Tiffany & Co., New York, the New York Athletic Club, Winged Foot, New York University, golf AND baseball? I have included many more photos below, please feel free to ask me for more, I\'m happy to oblige. Don\'t miss this one!!Please note different monitors may show color differently.
Excerpt from Bill McCarthy obituary, New York Times, April 1986-

Bill McCarthy, who coached baseball at New York University from 1922 to 1961 and saw four of his players become regulars in the major leagues, died Tuesday in Palm Beach, Fla., after his second stroke in three months. He was 91 years old.

In his 40 years at N.Y.U., his teams compiled a record of 476 victories and 258 losses, with 12 ties. N.Y.U. won the Metropolitan Conference championship nine times, six consecutive times from 1943 to 1948. His last champion, the 1956 team, was the only one to reach the College World Series in Omaha, where the Violets lost to Arizona and Wyoming.

His players who made it to the big leagues included George (Kiddo) Davis, an outfielder who hit .368 for the New York Giants in the 1933 World Series; Sam Mele, an outfielder with Boston, Washington and the Chicago White Sox who later managed the Minnesota Twins to the 1965 World Series, and Eddie Yost, who played more than 2,000 games at third base, mostly for Washington, from 1946 to 1962. Branca Pitched for Him

Another was Ralph Branca, the Brooklyn Dodger pitcher who won 21 games as a rookie in 1947 but who is best remembered for allowing the New York Giants\' pennant-winning home run to Bobby Thomson four years later.

Al Campanis, another former N.Y.U. player under Mr. McCarthy, is general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.sale TERMS- PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.....
