Description

This is wonderful Belt Buckle by noted Navajo silversmith Tommy Singer. It is signed with the \"THOMAS SINGER\" mark on the back of the buckle, as well at \"Sterling\", asseenin the photographs. This is one of many of his smith marks. According to Barton Wright in \"Hallmarks of the Southwest\" (page 156), he has used ten or so. Many of his earlier pieces were not signed at all. In terms of size, thisLarge buckle is 3.7\" X3\".It weighs80.5 grams(2.59 Troy ounces). Note, as you view the pictures, howthick this is because the Turquoise stands so high in the bezel above the surface of the domed buckle and the contour of the buckle itself. There isthe ability to use a belt of up to 1.9\" with this buckle. It wasmade by Tommyin the most recent decadeand represents the height of his talent in a career of over half a century of making remarkable Navajo Indian Jewelry. I\'ve seen and have traded lots of his work andalways enjoyed dealing with his remarkable jewelry. TheSilver Overlay and Stamp work is complimented by the KingmanMine Turquoise that isabout 1.06\" X .93\" in size including the bezel. As far as condition goes, take a look at the pictures. I think it will please you. Most people would call a large in size.I also have a several other Sterling Silver Tommy Singer Buckles listed now on .

Consider this an opportunity to own an iconic Tommy SingerOverlay buckle. Tommy was a pioneer in several areas of Native American Indian jewelry. He is famous worldwide for his development of the \"Chip Inlay\" technique. As a Navajo artist, he is an early adopterand remains a recognized expert in the silver smithing technique of \"Silver Overlay\". This Buckle is an outstanding example of that technique! I personally ownseveral Tommy Singer belt buckles andcuff bracelets for my personal enjoyment in my collection and to wear. This is a buckle that you can wear for most occasions and that will be recognized by folks that know their Native Jewelry. Silver Overlay

In the 1930\'s, the University of Northern ArizonahelpedHopi silversmithsdevelop a unique style and technique to differentiate themselves from the Navajos. It involves bondingof two formerly distinct sheets of Sterling Silver and is known as Silver Overlay. For decades, the Hopi have excelled at this and to some it defines the \"Hopi Style.\" Since Tommy Singer\'searly career in the 1960\'s, he hasworked in Silver Overlay, which was not typical for a Navajo artist at the time. He has won countless awardsand is considered a master. This very fine example of his innovative contemporary work.

Singer was born in 1940. He is still very active in creating jewelry and is often seen at Indian Fairs, Gem Shows, visiting stores in Gallupand all around Indian Country. His likeness and several of his creations are pictured in \"American Indian Jewelry1\" by Gregory Schaaf (pages 291-292). Variuos articles and features about him are in countless books and other publications. He is widely collected and his work appears in museums from The Peabody Museum at Harvard to The University of Colorado. Here is what Tommy Singer had to say when interviewed, \"I try hard to make different styles and designs of my jewelry...every piece is made with the meanings from my traditional ways, my father was a silversmith. He taught me to continue this trade. It was my father\'s dream that I learn to silversmith, so that I continue his belief.\"
