Here is an interesting piece of French Judaica. This is a Torah Wimpel made in France. The artisan who made the Torah tie initials HS. The H and the S flank a Jewish Star of David. The silver thread embroidery beautifully done shows a lion, a bird and flowers. All are symbolisms used by Jewish artisans in Europe in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The metal inlayed with colored stones is quite heavy. We believe it to be brass. Perhaps gold gilt brass. This Torah wimpel was purchased in France in the 1970\' s. The recycled cloth appears to be extremely old. This Torah wimpel was used on a small Torah, probably a personal family Torah.
