Touro Synagogue is a reminder that the American Jewish community did not originate on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Over 300 years ago, Sephardic sea merchants arrived in Newport, Rhode Island from Barbados (1677). This group soon left and it was not until 1740 that another contingent of Jews made their way to these shores.

With the help of Congregation Shearith Israel of New York, the Touro Synagogue was built in 1759, named for its benefactor, Abraham Touro.

It is the oldest Jewish house of worship in North America. Designed by Peter Harrison, it is a smaller version of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam.

An interesting element in the construction is a trapdoor built into the platform of the bima, a grim reminder of the Spanish Inquisition when Jews had to hide in underground shelters of their temples.

After the Revolutionary War, President George Washington sent a letter to the Touro congregants reassuring them of their freedom to practice their religion.

But by the early 19th century, the Newport community was on the decline, and the synagogue was defunct until its second revival in the 1880\'s, again by Sephardic Jews.

With its rich history intertwined with the very premises on which the United States was founded, Touro Synagogue is a magnet for dignitaries, historians and authors.

Currently, services reflect both the Eastern European influence of recent years and the synagogue\'s Sephardic past.

This mezuzah was designed by the Emblem and Badge Company of Providence, Rhode Island and is used as a means for raising funds to maintain the synagogue.

Of cast brass, the upper section is marked Touro Synagogue above a replica of the building, while the lower portion contains a centered Shaddai amid a foliate motif.
