This is an exceptional hand-chased solid .875 silver platter/tray, made in the Middle East in Isfahan (Esfahan)during the 3rd quarter of the 20th Century. It is in superb condition, without wear to the decoration.

The platter is 35.2 cm in diameter (13.86 inches) and weighs a hefty 904 g(32 ounces), which is 29 troy ounces.

The low starting offer is not much more than the bullion value

A beautiful object for use or display!

It is finely decorated with intricate circular patterns of stylized geometric shapes, Islamic motifs, and bands of flowers and leaves. There is extensive background matting composed of small dots, and hardly any of the surface is left undecorated. The applied outer rim is cast with a complementary floral pattern.

The platter was purchased in the Middle East in Esfahan in the early 1970s, before the Islamic Revolution, and has been stored ever since. As expected, the underside shows a ‘shadow’ of the surface decoration since the surface is chased rather than engraved. Chasing is a far more laborious method and shows off the master silversmith’s skills which in this case are superior.

There are two silver marks next to each other under the rim (see photo 4. Hallmarks). The first is a maker’s mark in Farsi script, the second is ‘84’ in Persian numerals. The number 84 indicates the silver purity based on the Russian Imperial system, which is 84 out of 96 zolotniks. This corresponds to .875 silver, slightly lower than the sterling standard, but higher than the common European standard of .800.
