These bookends are made from material salvaged off the U.S.S. Constitution \"OLD IRONSIDES\" during the 1927 restoration as a fund raiser authorized by an act of congress.( see picture of original advertisment). They were cast in the U.S. Naval gun factory. Paul Revere, the famous Boston patriot, had the contract to supply the brass for the original construction of this famous ship in and launced in 1797.These probablly contain some of that original brass and copper. The USS Constitution earned the nickname, \"Old Ironsides,\" when cannon balls bounced off her frame during victorious battles against the British in the War of 1812. She is the oldest commissioned ship in the United States Navy. These are 88 years old and have a beautiful patina. They are a real piece of American history. I tried to show them as acurately as possible, they do not stand straight but fit together perfectly. In December 1926, the souvenir portion of the campaign commenced and by 1928 the first sales of souvenirs were made. The Committee sold souvenirs made from parts of Constitution that had been removed. Some items that were sold included pieces of wood and cordage, bookends, wood frames, gavel sets, plaques, anchors, cigarette boxes, miniature cannons, and bolts. The souvenir campaign raised a gross of $241,220.57 according to the calculations made on March 1, 1930.
