This Autograph Letter Signed (7.75\" x 9.75\") by U.S. Grant is of immense historical importance. It is, to my knowledge, the only known existing hand written document by Grant written on February 6, 1862 from Fort Henry, Tennessee. February 6, 1862 is recognized as the date of the first significant Union Victory during the American Civil War. Important Grant war era letters routinely sell for +$15,000 (check Christie\'s sales) and this one has both (1) date...best Grant date ever and (2) content directing supplies and troops.
Background on historical significance of February 6, 1862:
From History.com:The Battle of Fort Henry on February 6, 1862, was the first significant Union victory of the American Civil War (1861-65).Prior to Ft. Henry, the Union armies had suffered humiliating defeat after defeat giving pause to President Lincoln\'s goal of preserving the Union. U.S. Grant, Ft. Henry and February 6, 1862 was the confluence of time, chance and opportunity that elevated Grant\'s significance with President Lincoln and catapulted him to eventual command all Union troops.
Carl Sandburg writes in \"Abraham Lincoln\" the following...\"On February 6, 1862, Commodore Foote\'s gunboats escorted steamboats up the Tennessee River carrying 18 regiments under Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant. They crowded the decks watching the scenery, 18,000 troops-cornhuskers, teamsters, rail splitters, shopmen, factory hands, college students, from Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, many of the not yet old enough to vote. The gunboats stopped at Fort Henry, shelled it, and troops marched in and took its Flag.\"
