The US Cavalry was held in reserve during WW1, ready to exploit an infantry breakthrough that never came. The Cavalry was used mostly to escort officers and supply convoys, and provide guard for headquarters. Cavalrymen were trained to fire the M-1903 Springfield on horseback, and the rifle was carried in a handy brown leather scabbard strapped to the saddle. This US Army WW1 CAVALRY M-1904 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE LEATHER SADDLE SCABBARD is in fair condition, with heavy drying, scuffing, and surface cracking along the left side edge, several names and initials stamped and scratched into the front and back, some scattered grayish soiling around the bottom, the leather tie down lace having been cut short and then pushed back into the darkened brass drain grommet at the front end tip, moderate overall drying, darkening, and surface cracking, missing both hanging straps, and with moderate overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the scabbard is in fair shape, with no other damage to the tough brown leather construction.
