Thispatchwasauthorized by the US Forest Service, featuring their mascot Smokey Bear.
Smokey Bear became the agency\'s mascot in 1944. He was adopted after being orphaned during a forest fire in Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico.
To this day the fictional character still educates the public on the dangers of wildfires.
Many things related to Smokey Bear are highly sought after and very collectible.
They have included almost anything imaginable including stickers, posters, patches, magnets,
bumper stickers, pencils, rulers and pins... just to name a few.
The patches, like most itemswere available at public relation events where a fire prevention or firefighting group would have a booth or stand set up.
This patch was the issued patch for the year 1979.
It measures4 1/2\" tall by2 7/8\" wide, and is in unused, uncirculated condition.
