The US Presidents used large medallions as peace offerings or gifts to the native american tribes. There are a number of photos of \"Indians\" proudly wearing the medals. This is an unusual oval medal, from President James A. Garfield. The medal is heavy bronze, weighing in at just over 5 ounces. It is about 3\" tall and 2.5\" wide. One side designed by Charles Barber and the other by George Morgan. It is my understanding that the US Government made new castings from the original dies back in the 1970s, and this is probably one of them. I highly doubt it is an original. But the manufacturing quality is perfect with every detail crisp and clear.
