US Marines deployed to Vietnam in early 1965. By August they had seen their first action, cutting off and destroying a large Viet Cong force on the coast at Chu Lai in Operation Starlite. Leathernecks \"in the \'Nam\" were issued the M-1955 flak vest for protection in the field. This USMC Marine US Vietnam GRAFFITI M-1955 FLAK VEST is in good condition, with a broken, non-functional front zipper, moderate dark soiling to the cord rope at the right shoulder, two small holes in the top of that cord rope,a small surface tear in the right side edge,a few lines of whitish soiling at the lower right side edge,very small frayed spots at the bottom right side edge and each side of the lower back,some scattered dark soiling to the nylon lower front pockets, a bit of loose threading to the lower left pocket button, small spots of whitish soiling at each side of the chest, moderate loose threading to the bottom of the Doron plate at the middle back hem, a spot of whitish soiling at the lower left back, spots of whitish and dark soiling at the upper right back, and with some scattered age wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the vest is in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it carries a spade and \"Body Count / 11\" hand applied in black magic marker at the right chest, along with \"DROUIN Lt. / USMC / CATH\" at the left chest, and \"WELSH\" across the interior back. The vest is a Size Medium, sports the classic cord roped right shoulder and grommeted integral waist belt, and is dated \"MAY 7 1968\" on the original nomenclature tag at the inside neck.
