USSConstitutionis a wooden-hulled, three-mastedheavyfrigateof theUnited States Navy, named by PresidentGeorge Washingtonafter theConstitution of the United States of America. Launched in 1797,Constitutionwas one ofsix original frigatesauthorized for construction by theNaval Act of 1794and the third constructed.Joshua Humphreysdesigned the frigates to be the young Navy\'scapital ships, and soConstitutionand her sisters were larger and more heavily armed and built than standard frigates of the period.Constitutionwas built in the North End ofBoston,Massachusetts, atEdmund Hartt\'s shipyard. Her first duties with the newly formed U.S. Navy were to provide protection for American merchant shipping during theQuasi-Warwith France and to defeat theBarbary piratesin theFirst Barbary War.

Constitutionis most famous for her actions during theWar of 1812against theUnited Kingdom, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British andLevant. The battle withGuerriereearned her the nickname of \"Old Ironsides\" and public adoration that has repeatedly saved her from scrapping. She continued to serve asFlagshipin theMediterraneanandAfricansquadrons, and circled the world in the 1840s. During theAmerican Civil War, she served as atraining shipfor theUnited States Naval Academy. She carried US artwork and industrial displays to theParis Exposition of 1878.

Retired from active service in 1881,Constitutionserved as areceiving shipuntil designated amuseum shipin 1907. In 1934 she completed a three-year, 90-port tour of the nation.Constitutionsailed under her own power for her 200th birthday in 1997, and again in August 2012, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her victory overGuerriere.

In 1785Barbary pirates, most notably fromAlgiers, began to seize Americanmerchant vesselsin the Mediterranean. In 1793 alone, eleven American ships were captured and their crews and stores held for ransom. To combat this problem, proposals were made for warships to protect American shipping, resulting in theNaval Act of 1794.[9][10]The act provided funds to constructsix frigates, but included a clause that if peace terms were agreed to with Algiers, the construction of the ships would be halted.[11][12]

Joshua Humphreys\' design was unusual for the time, being long onkeeland narrow ofbeam(width) and mounting very heavy guns. The design called for a diagonalscantling(rib) scheme intended to restricthoggingwhile giving the ships extremely heavy planking. This design gave thehulla greater strength than a more lightly built frigate. Humphreys\' design was based on his realization that the fledgling United States of the period could not match the European states in the size of their navies. This being so, the frigates were designed to be able to overpower any other frigate yet escape from aship of the line.[13][14][15]

Primary materials used in her construction consisted of pine and oak, includingsouthern live oak, which was cut fromGascoigne Bluffand milled nearSt. Simons, Georgia.[16]Her masts were of white pine from Maine.[17]Samuel Nicholson, who would become the first captain of the ship, offered the owner of theOld Avery Oak Tree\"the unheard of price of $70\" to buy the tree to harvest the timber for the keel, but the owner would not sell.[18][19]The keel was ultimately constructed from an alternative white oak tree, sourced from New Jersey.[17]

The nameConstitutionwas selected by PresidentGeorge Washington.[20]Her keel was laid down on 1 November 1794 atEdmund Hartt\'s shipyard in Boston, Massachusetts, under the supervision of Captain Nicholson and naval constructor ColonelGeorge Claghorn.[16][21]Constitution\'s hull was built 21 inches (530mm) thick and herlength between perpendicularswas 175ft (53m), with a 204ft (62m)length overalland a width of 43ft 6in (13.26m).[2][4]In total, 60 acres (24ha) of trees were needed for her construction.[22]Paul Revereforged the copper bolts and breasthooks.[23]Thecopper sheathing, installed to preventshipworm, was imported from England.[24][Note 1]

Sail Plan ofConstitutionClaghorn\'s announcement of the launching

In March 1796, as construction slowly progressed, a peace accord was announced between the United States and Algiers and, in accordance with the Naval Act of 1794, construction was halted.[26]After some debate and prompting by President Washington, Congress agreed to continue to fund the construction of the three ships nearest to completion:United States,Constellation, andConstitution.[27][28]Constitution\'s launching ceremony on 20 September 1797 was attended by then PresidentJohn Adamsand Massachusetts GovernorIncrease Sumner. Upon launch, she slid down the ways only 27 feet (8.2m) before stopping; her weight had caused the ways to settle into the ground, preventing further movement. An attempt two days later resulted in only an additional 31 feet (9.4m) of travel before the ship again stopped. After a month of rebuilding the ways,Constitutionfinally slipped intoBoston Harboron 21 October 1797, with Captain James Sever breaking a bottle of Madeira wine on her bowsprit.[29][30]

Armament[edit]

Though rated as a 44-gun frigate,Constitutionoften carried over 50 guns at a time.[31]Ships of this era had no permanent battery of guns, such as modern Navy ships carry. The guns and cannons were designed to be completely portable, and often were exchanged between ships as situations warranted. Each commanding officer outfitted armaments to his liking, taking into consideration factors such as the overall tonnage of cargo, complement of personnel aboard, and planned routes to be sailed. Consequently, the armaments on ships changed often during their careers, and records of the changes were not generally kept.[32]

During the War of 1812,Constitution\'s battery of guns typically consisted of thirty 24-pounder (11kg) cannons, with 15 on each side of thegun deck. A total of 22 cannons, each a 32-pounder (15kg)carronade, were deployed on thespar deck, 11 per side. Fourchase gunswere also positioned, two each at the stern and bow.[33]

Since her 1927–1931 restoration, all of the guns aboardConstitutionare replicas. Most were cast in 1930, but two carronades on the spar deck were cast in 1983.[34]In order to restore the capability of firing ceremonialsalutes, during her 1973–1976 restoration, a modern 40mm (1.6in) saluting gun was hidden inside the forward long gun on each side.[35]
