Synopsis

Undine is a novel by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué concerning Undine, a water spirit who marries a Knight named Huldebrand in order to gain a soul. It is an early German romance, which has been translated into English and other languages. During the nineteenth century the book was very popular and was, according to The Times in 1843, \"a book which, of all others, if you ask for it at a foreign library, you are sure to find engaged\". The story, which has resemblances to The Little Mermaid by Andersen, is descended from Melusine, the French folk-tale of a water-sprite who marries a knight on condition that he shall never see her on Saturdays, when she resumes her mermaid shape.

---------- About the Author/Illustrator---------

Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte, Baron Fouqué (1777–1843), was a German writer of the romantic movement. He was born at Brandenburg an der Havel. His grandfather, Heinrich August de la Motte Fouqué, had been one of Frederick the Great\'s generals and his father was a Prussian officer. Although not originally intended for a military career, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué ultimately gave up his university studies at Halle to join the army, and he took part in the Rhine campaign of 1794. The rest of his life was devoted mainly to literary pursuits.

Arthur Rackham (1867 – 1939) was a prolific English book illustrator. He was born in London as one of 12 children. At the age of 18, he worked as a clerk at the Westminster Fire Office and began studying at the Lambeth School of Art. In 1892, he quit his job and started working for The Westminster Budget as a reporter and illustrator. His works were included in numerous exhibitions, including one at the Louvre in Paris in 1914. While he may be best known for his elaborate illustrations of children\'s literature and fairy tales, he also illustrated books for adult readers, including A Midsummer Night\'s Dream (1908) and Undine.
