A UNION SOLDIER WRITES TO HISSISTER FROM CAMP CURTIN IN HARRISBURG – “ISUPPOSE YOU HAVE FORMED SOME OPINION AS TO HOW PERSONS FARE IN CAMP YOU WOULDPERHAPS NOT LIKE IT BUT I LIKE IT”

(CIVIL WAR LETTER). ALS. 4pgs. August 12, 1862. Camp Curtin,Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. An autograph letter signed “W. W. Merrick” by aUnion soldier, addressed to his sister. The author discusses mundane topicssuch as the weather and his clothing, but claims to enjoy camp life inHarrisburg. “Dear Sister This morning I was greatly rejoiced to see some of theHartleton folks; Wm Whitmas, Mark Halfpenny, Mr Pelleman & Howard & tohear that the people were all well. I am well and like it here first rate thereare a great many soldiers here at present, & the number is supposed to besome twenty thousands they appear to be of a grand class, there may be somewhose manners are corrupt but such are to be found everywhere. I suppose youhave formed some opinion as to how persons fare in camp you would perhaps notlike it but I like it & I think if I live and keep well I shall like itstill better. For this summer now is very warm & after a month or so itwill get cooler, and be more agreeable. For you very well know, that an extremetempperature [sic] be it of heat orcold, is very hard to overcome, but the former much more so than the latter. Today we will receive our country bounty, I will send mine with Wm. Whitman it hepays me interest he may keep it for nine months or a year but if you need ityou may have it or if you do not need it much, any time you may need it you canget it of him. I drew two pairs of drawers with my uniform I sent them homewith my other clothes, I kept my shirts here; the shirts I drew are two coarse,they strate [sic] me much. You willfind out where they are by asking Mark Halfpenny all the clothes that were senthome were put in a large box and trusted to him. The key to my carpet sack Illsend with Whitman. I saw David Wilson last evening. He says he likes it verywell Mark Halfpenny told me this morning that Mother would like me to come homebut I think it will be the best for me to stay as I now sworn in and further Ilike it and am serving my country which every one ought to do what can I thinkif I keep well it will be the making as far as health is concerned that is if Iam taken with a fever or some such disease tell Mother not to fret that I willtake care of myself as much as I can. Your Brother W. M. Merrick”. The letter is in good condition with severalfold lines, some of which obscure a few words of text.
