We are proud to offer you ---- a mystery!! Being no experts in old pottery, we did a lot of online research, and we\'ll just tell you what we know about this intriguing vintage piece:
  • 9 1/2\" tall and quite heavy (2.1 lbs) , this wine jug seems to be VERY old. Some crazing (especially visible on the mermaid).
  • The glaze is an antique matte, not the typical glossy finish normally found on Majolica.
  • The bottom is unmarked.
  • The inside has the same matte finish as the outside, and the inside bottom glaze looks too flaky to be used to hold liquid.
  • No damage other than 6 tiny areas where the blue/green color chipped off (all pictured in the photos).
Here comes the confusing part:
  • The exact design can be found in HOLDCROFT\'s Cobalt Majolica Mermaid 9 1/2\" Wine Jug (glossier finish) , but also MINTON\'s Pompeian Wine Ewer (same coloring but added cherubs). The most unusual fact about this piece: The shape of the spout, coloring and matte finish bears great resemblance to ROSEVILLE\'s Apple Blossom pitcher.
We hope that you are an expert who can shed some light on this mysterious find. ( Our guess is that 100 years ago, a very talented potter who was fond of all three styles, created this masterpiece. )
