Partially printed vellum document signed “James Madison” and “James Monroe” and a second “James Madison” signature at top of the document. Completed by hand, 14.75 x 8.50 inch. Land Grant for Alexander Cothram of Miami County. White paper seal at left. 27. September 1811. The document has the usual folds and is soiled, heavier on the back. Minor paper loss at left and a small hole in the middle due to the horizontal and vertical folds.

The document is interesting because it was not countersigned by the commissioner of the land office. The Congress created the office of the Commissioner of the General Land Office on April 25, 1812, this document was signed seven month earlier. The General Land Office was initially a bureau of and subordinate to the Treasury Department. By act of March 3, 1849 the Home (now interior) Department was created and was assigned the supervision of the General Land Office. Later documents have the name of the President PRINTED at the top, this earlier one has the name of the President filled in by hand – here by the President himself. For my Manuscript Society article on land grants some years ago I did a lot of research, but this document is the only one I know on which Madison wrote his name a second times. A rare combination of signatures and one of the most unusual signed land grants available.
