This is a fantastic World War Two silk escape map from the estate of Colonel Chester Baily McCoid who parachuted into Normandy on D Day and then served for over 34 years. This is one of three of his escape maps that we will be listing, so please take a look at the others as well.On September 17, 1944, US and British paratroopers jumped on Holland in Operation Market Garden, tasked with seizing key bridges between Eindhoven and Arnhem to allow British armor to cross the Rhine into Germany, and hopefully end the war by Christmas. For that ill-fated assault, US airborne officers were issued well detailed silk escape maps to orient themselves and direct their troops on the ground. This US Army WW2 MARKET GARDEN PARATROOPER AIRBORNE \"C/D\" HOLLAND SILK ESCAPE MAP is in excellent condition, with creases throughout (it could be CAREFULLY ironed), and with some light edge wear evident (some pictured). Otherwise, the map is in excellent shape, with absolutely no rips, holes, tears, stains, or other damage to the smooth silk construction. Most interestingly, it\'s the classic two sided 43 series sheet \"F/G\", and bears incredibly well detailed maps of Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. A beautiful example of a very rare, original US Army WW2 MARKET GARDEN PARATROOPER AIRBORNE \"F/G\" SILK ESCAPE MAP. This historic map was purchased out of sale of the estate of Col. McCoid (you can look back and see that we have sold other pieces from the estate). The silk map measures just under 30\" (or about 76cm) tall x just about 34&3/4\" (or just about 88cm) wide.
