This is an absolutely breathtaking, deeply carved, high quality, working, large antique cuckoo clock that was produced in the Black Forest of Germany about 80 years ago! The clock is made entirely ofcured and aged Linden wood which is the choice of fine carvers within the Black Forest since 1860 or so. The trees only grow at certain altitudes and mostly in the Black Forest of Southern Germany and north Switzerland. The clock is deeply carved, quite intricate, and wavy. It is adorned with five, large wood grape leaves and another carved leaf is found onthe wooden pendulum. The finish is blended walnut and the wooden dialchapter ring has a black backdrop featuring white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy handsto point out the time. There are wooden access doors on either side of the case that have a wooden twist pull on each. They remove to allow access to the front of the movement in case any adjustments need to be made from that angle. There is awooden back on the case that is secured with a metal latch. The backremoves easily to allow access to the weight driven, mechanical, rack style movement produced by \"G Mangem,\" the early name for what is now Regula. Aweight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulledoccasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. Regula makes the best movements and all high end old clocks have this movement. The wooden bellow tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, the small wooden door above the dialopens and a colorful bird stands in the doorway. He gives off a singledeep cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside the casebefore retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. Thecuckoo bird comes out again at the top of each hour and correctlycuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside theclock; fascinating! The clock works well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos likeit should though it is an old clock and we don\'t know the service history. I did find a service date inscribed on the inside of the back door: 6-25-09. Nonetheless, someadjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its newhome. We always advise our clock customers to service their antiqueor vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will continue to preserve a rare clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. I\'velooked the clock over fairly well and it is fully intact, showing little signs of use with no missing parts or damage. I did find a nicely done repair to the upper frame bird but very hard to see and not at all detracting. I doubt if anything could. It is a very impressiveclock, and equally so in size measuring nearly 16\" high (not counting theweights or pendulum), about 6 1/2\" at its deepest point, and about 12\" across the top. The clock comescomplete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a wooden carved leafpendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clockis unique, very special, and will be the focal point in any collection.
