Description:

THE HEART OF THE WORLD is a Victorian guide to living a happy, prosperous, polite and moral existence. It takes the reader by the hand and guides him along the path of righteousness, pointing out potential pitfalls along the way and furnishing time-honored advice to stay on the straight and narrow course.

This handsome Victorian volume consists of a series of compelling essays on a range of vital topics to illustrate virtues and vices, personal responsibilities and duties, managing one’s emotions, facing challenges and adversities, appreciating one’s blessings, social institutions and etiquette, personal appearance, marriage, home life, spiritual harmony, God, the Bible, etc.

THE HEART OF THE WORLD is a book written in an era when character and integrity, self-reliance and moral rectitude were highly esteemed in America – a time when success was measured not by how many “likes” or “followers” you have on social media, but by the degree of respect and esteem you commanded in your local community and among your peers. The truths contained in this book are as valid today as the day it was first published, the only difference being that modern society has turned a deaf ear.

The Preface states the book’s mission:

Its aim is to be a brother-book in American homes, to open them to the sunshine of the best life, to make them the seeding ground of all good principles, the nurseries of noble character and harmonious and happy society. It is an honest attempt to be a counseling voice and a helping hand where counsel and help may best serve men in their close and conflicting relations. It speaks plainly but kindly of the unwisdom and wrongs of men; criticizes freely; rebukes sharply, and hunts earnestly for the way of wisdom and the help to walk therein steadily.

It believes in God implicitly, in men a great deal, in character as of infinite value, in the Divine ordainment of Home and Society as its legitimate outgrowth. It goes out with a great faith, a warm heart and a willing hand, to do what it can in everybody’s behalf. In its aim, author and publisher are agreed, and with earnest cooperation join in their home-improving and world-helping endeavor.

To give you a firmer idea of the breadth and scope of this beautiful and instructive Victorian book, I have furnished some helpful details below, starting with a summary of the various fascinating topics to which the book’s many essays are devoted. Further down the page, you can see some of the handsome engravings from THE HEART OF THE WORLD.

I hope you’ll take a few moments to have a look.
