DescriptionThese two miniatures are hand made and hand painted from a soft wood, and come from the Erzgebirge region of Germany. They date to the 1920\'s, and are often called \"Flatzies\", because they are - flat! They are embossed, painted on both sides and slot mounted on a wooden base. This type of piece was sold in play sets that included all sorts of animals, as well as figures, landscaping and houses. The pieces were often used to decorate a train village, and are great for Christmas Putz villages, as well (the village scenes that people display under their trees each year at Christmas). The pieces are unmarked - the box they came would have been marked, but the pieces not so much.

Flatzie sets made from cast metal (usually lead) were made in other regions of Germany during this same time. Similar pieces were sold in the US during the Great Depression, but were made from die cut heavy paper and cardboard, and would slide mount onto small wooden bases.

These wood pieces are charming pieces of folk art! They measure 1\" across and 7/8\" tall for the chick, and 1 1/2\" across and 2 1/4\" tall for the rooster. Both have chips to their paint especially on the bases. All flaws are visible in the photos. They have a wonderful antique patina (the aged look that things get over time). . I have lots of other miniature German figures,including a lot of Flatzies, so take a look!
