Very Fine Vintage Carved Massim Pig, Png, Papua New Guinea:
Happy offerding. Please see my other rare listing of artefacts I am selling as well.
Collected in the 1960's by a manager of a large multi-national firm who spent 25 years living and working in PNG in the East New Britain area around Kokopo, this is a very rare old and fine Massim Pig carving from the Trobriand Islands, Milne Bay Province area of Papua New Guinea. This carving is part of a wonderful collection amassed by this individual (who wishes to remain anonymous) and her husband over a 25 year period and brought back to Australia in the early 90's. Over 600 pieces in total.
fine Massim Pig shows old-world craftsmanship no longer practiced
today. It is incised with traditional curvilinear decoration on both sides and
on the back and legs. In the Massim culture, Pigs were
the main store of wealth. Giving
offerings of Kula and shell wealth were thought to multiply ones wealth and
acquisition of pigs. The estimated age of the piece is between 1930’s to 1940’s. This is a lovely piece.
