I have never seen a cuckoo clock this old that is in such remarkably good condition. And seldom do I ever come across a high quality cuckoo like this one that was produced in \"Austria.\" There were only three famous clockmakers from Austria and I believe this clock was produced in Vienna around 1880 by Karl Suchy and Sons though it is not marked as such. The carvings look distinctively like his though there are no identifying marks on the movement which doesn\'t surprise me since the country of origin was not an international requirement until 1920. Austrians, however, put their country on the dial, \"Made in Austria\" since it was a matter of pride. Suchy had international distribution at that time and since around 1870...I\'m sure this is his clock. It is truly a breathtaking clock and one of the most well preserved antiques it has been my pleasure to own. Frankly, were it not for the cause listed below, this fabulous clock would remain in our home; no doubt about it. This clock is beautiful, deeply and uniquely carved, and working. This clock looks to have been carved from cured and aged Lindenwood. The clock is just stunning and has a gorgeous deep mahogany finish; very nice! The case is quite large and adorned with six intricately carved grape leaves and another is found on the wooden pendulum. The carvings are exceptional and unlike any I\'ve seen. Even the cuckoo door and grape vines are uniquely carved. There is a large, full dimension carved wooden bird sitting atop the clock looking as though he is content to remain where he is. The top is a separate piece and attached with the old hook and eye system to keep it secure. The wooden dial has a metal bezel surrounding it, a blackbackdrop, and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours. The numbers are the old style and individually nailed to the dial. There are fancy hands to point out the time and I think these may be bone though I\'m not sure about that. There are hinged wooden doors on either side of the case and each is secured with a brass metal hasp. They open easily to allow access to the front of the movement in case any adjustments are needed. Theclock has a fitted wood back and latches securely. There is a mostly intact label still attached to the back giving directions for set up and operation in English. The back easily removes toallow access to the mechanical, rack style, weight driven, brass metal movement inside the case embossed with the number \"31\" near the bottom. A weight drivenmovement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to windthe clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow tubes are in goodshape and the tops look and sound good too! The tops are the antique trapazoid style. At the bottom of each hour,a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in thedoorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nicesounding chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closingthe door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour andcorrectly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreating to thesafe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoosas it should but we don\'t know the service history. I did find some reasonably fresh oil on the movement suggesting that it may have had recent service though I can\'t confirm that. It is an old clock and some adjustments or service may benecessary once the clock makes the journey to its new home. We always recommend toour clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least onceevery three years. Doing so will preserve a great clock like this one andkeep it running strong. The clock comes complete as shown with two setsof attached metal chains, a carved grape leaf wooden pendulum, and two very heavypinecone shaped metal weights. I\'ve looked the clock over fairly well andcan\'t find anydamage, missing parts, or repairs. I get the impression that the clock sat in the same spot forever, perhaps over a fireplace since the finish has some light age crackle to it....not at all detracting. Frankly, nothing could detract from this clock; gorgeous on the wall! This clock is one of the most impressivecuckoos I\'ve ever seen and certain to be a focal point in any collection. It probably belongs in a museum but here it is. It is a very large clock too measuring about 20\" high(not counting the weights or pendulum), nearly 8\" at its deepest point, and about 17\" or so across the top. This clock is certainto get a lot of double-takes from any guests in your home, office, or wherever you care to showcase a very rare, beautifully carved, antique, Austrian timepiece. offer with confidence; you have found a gem!
