Very rare 1771-2 Daniel Popkins Irish Georgian cast sterling silver sugar tongs:

We are listing these very rare Irish Georgian cast sterling silver sugar tongs by the Dublin silversmith Daniel Popkins. Irish cast tongs are exceedingly rare - there are no examples of them at all on the silversugartongs website. The tongs are nicely decorated, and they are marked inside their bow with a partially rubbed Hibernia mark, crowned harp (the version used in 1771-1772), and DP maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1759 by Dublin silversmith Daniel Popkins (see page 668 of Jackson\'s Silver & Gold Marks). The tongs are almost 5.5 inches long, weigh 1.4 ounces, are nicely decorated, and they are in very good repaired condition. Almost all surviving cast tongs have been repaired (due to their fragile designs), and this pair has repairs to the arms and sides of the bow (the repairs are barely visible on the outside, but the inside views are highlighted in the last two pictures). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the tongs have not been professionally polished). Popkins is a very rarely seen tong maker - there is only one example of his bow shaped tongs on the silversugartongs website - and as previously noted, Irish cast tongs are virtually unknown.
