Victorian era cabinet card of a British Sailor created by A. Hing of 20A Queen\'s Road, E. Hong Kong as marked on the bottom of the card and reverse side. The sailor\'s hat reads Sparrowhawk. There were three HMS Sparrow Hawks that were active that this sailor could have possibly served on, two of which having been stationed in the Far East predominantly. The first one served between 1856 and 1872 and was lost in a Typhoon. The second one served between 1895 and 1904 and in 1904 ran aground at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The third one was active between 1912 and 1916 and was sunk in the battle of Jutland in World War I. I believe that the age of this photo and the Hong Kong photographer makes it rather clear that the Sparrowhawk this sailor served on was the second one which sailed in the British Navy from 1895 to 1904. The card is in good condition with some scattered dust soiling that is hard to notice. Card measures 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches.
