Victorian Silver Card Case

Birmingham 1876

Maker Frederick Marson

An antique sterling silver visiting card holder with a hinged lid to one end. Of rectangular form with a shaped edge. Excellent quality. The case is beautifully engraved to the front and back with an intricate pattern of flowers, leaves and scrolls.

The visiting or calling card was an essential accessory to any proper Regency or Victorian lady or gentleman. The cards, supplied by the local printer in small batches, served not just as a letter of introduction or aide memoire, but as an indicator of social class and good manners and they became an indispensible tool of etiquette with sophisticated rules governing their use. Some visiting cards included refined engraved ornaments, embossed lettering, and fantastic coats of arms however, the standard form of visiting card in the 19th century in the United Kingdom was a plain card with nothing more than the bearer\'s name on it. Sometimes the name of a gentlemens club might be added, but addresses were not otherwise included. Visiting cards were kept in highly decorated card cases which were status-enhancing accessories themselves.

Weight 50 grams, 1.6 troy ounces.

Length 9.6 cms. Width 6.3 cms. Height 0.75 cms.

Stamped on the edge of the body with a full set of English silver hallmarks for Birmingham 1876. The lid is unmarked.

Makers mark for Frederick Marson.

Condition. This useful little card case is in good but used condition. The general appearance of the case is nice and shiny and the engraved finish is still well defined. The top closes well. The body has a good set of clear English silver hallmarks, the matching top is unmarked which is quite common with card cases of this type. There are a few dents around the outside edges and the front and back have a few ripple marks to the surface. The top has a split on one side which we pulled apart to take the photo, when it is pushed back into position it is hardly noticeable.
