The back is expandable, a practice sometimes done by Jewelers from that era, rather than adding Gold to resize a ring, they simply cut the band and smoothed the edges, especially for Gentlemen with fingers that swell. This piece does have some enamel wear, and may be able to be re-done by a Jeweler or goldsmith, or someone who is good with enameling.
