Vintage 1920\'s RPPC real photo postcard of a child dressed as a clown holding flowers for the Apokries festival. The photo studio was in Thesaloniki, the 2nd largest city in Greece and capital of Greek Macedonia. It measures about 3 1/4 by 5 1/4. Has some creases but in otherwise solid shape.
Greeks do not actually celebrate “Halloween” in the strict sense of the word. Instead, they celebrateApokries. This holiday is all about dressing up in costumes and having fun like Halloween, only it is celebrated in February before Lent as part of the Greek Orthodox tradition.
This festival started in ancient times and was believed to be a form of worship for Dionysos, the God of wine and feast. The celebration is more of a carnival and is all about dressing up and having fun. This is basically Greece’s replacement for Halloween. The festival takes place over a period of three weeks, and consists of masquerades, adult dress ups, and parties.
Throughout the festival, the streets are filled with adults and children alike dressed in costumes making anonymous house calls to friends. Hosts offer sweets to the children and whiskey or other local brews to the adults. These treats are to entice visitors to remove their disguise and reveal their identitiesBy the end of the 21 days Apokries concludes with a Grand Carnival Parade which is held in cities all across the Greece, the largest and most famous of which takes place in Patra.
