Vintage 1940s / 1950s Busch Bavarian Beer Ski Chalet Lighted Sign Anheuser Busch:
$160.00

This is aVintage Anheuser Busch Lighted Sign Advertising Busch Bavarian Beer.

The sign has a great looking image of a Bavarian skichaletin the background with a frosty glass of Busch in the left foreground. The sign is made from very heavy steel, over engineered to the degree that definitely brings to mind the expression \"they don\'t make \'em like this anymore\". It is VERY heavy, weighing 11 1/2 pounds. Based on this heavy construction, the appearance of the front display and union stickers, and the overall appearance, I am fairly certain the sign is from either the 1940s or 1950s. It seriously doubt it is newer than the 50s. I guess it could be from the 1930s, but I though it was likely not that old, and in any case it seems it would certainly not be from the early 1930s before the repeal of prohibition. One of the photos showns the AB item number, 241, at the lower right corner of the sign. I tried researching that number on line but I was not successful.

The photos show the appearance of the sign both lighted and unlighted. A number of the photos have white highlight spots from my camera\'s photo flash. As found, there are issues regarding glass damage, so please review the condition section carefully.

The sign is 19 1/2\" wide x 12\" high. The bottom is 3 1/4\" deep tapering to 2\" deep at the top. There are a pair of metal hangers on top with a piece heavy picture wire for hanging. However, I would not totally trust these for hanging. After having taking the photos, I lifted the sign afew inches from where it wason the carpet, and somehow from theheavyweight, one of the metal hanger twistedsideways and came out from under the hold down bracket on top. Luckily no damage was none but I would recommend considering carefully what you want to do about safe hanging. As a reminder, I play to leave that side of the hanger unfastened. With some other attention to stability you could potentially display the sign on shelf, back bar or similar. In that case you would need to address the following.

  • On the bottom, there were originally two thumb screws that could removed by hand for inside access for replacement of the flourescent bulb or starter as described on the back panel. As found, one of the thumb screws is missingand you will need to find a suitable replacement. It seems to me this could be considered optional since the one thumb screw holds the hinged back panel pretty securely at the bottom, and since the hinges are at the top, gravity will basically keep the panel closed anyway. With respect to using a shelf, the thumb screws make the back edge higher than the front edge so you would need some sort of shim to level the base on a shelf.
  • With this heavy weight, even if you address the above, I would strongly recommend securing the sign and not simply leaving it free standing on a shelf (if you opt not to hang it).

This great looking old sign is really a nostalgic piece and it would be a wonderful addition to any collection of Anheuser Busch items or any general collection of beer signs!

Condition

The sign has the following issues:

  • Glass - the sign is printed in full color on a sturdy sheet of plastic vellum or similar. This sheet is in excellent condition. The sheet was originally sandwiched between two plates of glass. As found there is a broken chunk out of the front sheet of glass as seen in a closeup photo, marked with arrows. The back glass was much more substantially broken but most of the pieces were still in stable position so that there is no damage to the image on the plastic. I was not confident that that would be the case during shipment, even with the very careful packing I will do, so I removed and discarded the back glass plate. I have a number of steps below, but I am confident that you will find them quite easy to do. The steps I took are the same ones you will have to take to replace the glass:
    • remove thumb screw and open the hinged back
    • remove two small sheet metal screws, accessed from the outside, on each of the four interior padded hold down strips, and remove the strips
    • loosen the nuts and bolts for the two hanger brackets on top until you can pull them to the outside enough so that the edge of the remaining glass panel will clear the ends of the bolts.
    • remove the cardboard backing I taped to the metal sides to stablize the plastic sheet during shipping, then remove the plastic sheet.
    • remove the broken glass panel and be sure to measure it carefully before discarding so that you ensure buying two replacement glass panels of the correct dimensions and thickness.
    • purchase the glass panels. Put them in place with the plastic sheet between them making sure the right side it toward the top and taking care to make sure you have the lettering reading left to right from the front.
    • reverse the first few steps above to reassemble the sign.
  • Thumb screw - one is missing as already noted above and you can replace it if desired.
  • Hanger - the hanger loop coming loose from the weight is already noted above. You could simply loosen the bolt for the bracket that secures it, but since the loop has a gap at the bottom. If you plan to use a wire hanger similar to the original configuration, I would definitely recommend replacing the hanger with a very sturdy piece that DOES NOT have a gap at the bottom, and make sure you have very heavy and very secure wire that will hold the 12.5 pound sign securely. If hanging on dry wall you want to make sure you use a heavy duty steel picture hanger, ideally secured with a molly bolt rated for this weight.

Thesign is otherwise in excellent condition, but it is offered as found / as seen / as described with respect to the broken and missing glass, the missing thumb screw on the bottom panel, and any repair or refurbishing needed to provide a secure method of visit our store to view a wide variety of antique, vintage and contemporary items.
