Vintage 1950\'s Eugene Savage Matson Lines Cruise Menu HAWAIIAN Mural Prints Lot
You\'re going to love these! Found at a local estate, these fabulous, detailed & colorful oversized vintage 1950\'s Hawaiian prints were created in the late 1930\'s by artist Eugene Savage. Savage was commissioned by the Matson Cruise Lines to paint large murals depicting Hawaiian historical scenes, to be reprinted as menu covers. The actual murals that Savage painted were 4\' by 8\'. Nine murals were commissioned for menu covers. The murals went into storage in Savage\'s basement. The menus weren\'t printed until after WWII ended, as the cruise ships were requisitioned as US Transport ships during the war. Savage\'s amazing artwork made it\'s debut on the Matson Line menu covers in 1948, on the maiden voyage of the White Ship \"Lurline\". In 1951 Savage\'s Hawaiian prints were included in a Smithsonian exhibit and in 1950 they received the highest award by the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
These 3 oversized Eugene Savage Hawaiian prints are original vintage 1950\'s era prints, unused as menus & unfolded. They\'ve never been displayed. They are printed on heavy cover stock, with brief descriptions of the scenes, printed in gray on the reverse sides. The prints measure 21\" wide by 13.75\" tall. Each is signed in the corner \"E. Savage\". The prints include: Pomp and Circumstance, Aloha the Universal Word and Festival of the Sea.
All three prints are in Very Good to Excellent condition, with no damage. No tears, creases or stains. Very subtle signs of age include minor tanning to the heavy paper stock & bumps on corners. Good luck on these amazing old prints!
