Vintage 1970 24\" SCULPTURE Statue of a Loving Embracing Couple titled \"Wedding Rings\" by German Jewish sculptor Peter Lipman-Wulf, reproduced by Alva Studios. Hard to find. We found many small reproductions, but nothing on this scale.Sculptor Peter Lipman-Wulf first conceived this celebration of love and marriage in 1953 and sculpted it from Brazilian rosewood. Lipman-Wulf’s then-wife, Muriel, had the idea to call it Wedding Rings, since the artist’s poverty had prevented the couple from buying wedding rings at the time. Thus renamed and exhibited in 1958, the piece received much attention. Lipman-Wulf\'s sensitive depiction of the bond of marriage was later cast in bronze. This Alva Studios reproduction is cast from \"Alvastone\", a casting material derived from gypsum, with a beautiful copper bronze patina - Copyright P. Lipman-Wulf 1970

    BIOGRAPHY
Peter Lipman-Wulf (1905-1993) was a German-born sculptor who lived in the United States for nearly 50 years. He was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Academy. Mr. Lipman-Wulf, who was Jewish, left Germany in 1933 when the Nazis came to power, after being dismissed from his post at the Prussian Academy in Berlin and having several sculpture commissions canceled. He moved first to Paris and although he did not declare himself to the French government as a Jew, in 1939 he was arrested as an \"enemy alien\". He and hundreds of other immigrants were interned at Les Milles near Aix-en-Provence. (He was in sterling company, as his fellow detainees included painter Max Ernst, opera producer Friedrich Schramm, journalist Heinz Bieber-Georgi, two Nobel Prize winners in medicine, and numerous other \"undesirables.\") In 1940 he volunteered for a work detail in Normandy, from which he managed to escape to Basel, Switzerland where he remained through the end of the war.In 1947 Lipman-Wulf moved to the United States, settling in New York and eventually becoming an American citizen. In addition to his own artistic endeavors he taught at Adelphi University on Long Island. He worked in wood, bronze and ceramics in a semi-abstract style that often reflected the influence of German Expressionism. He also did portrait busts, including those of the conductors Bruno Walter and Karl Bohm for the Metropolitan Opera. He exhibited his work at galleries in New York City and had a retrospective at the Jewish Museum in 1961. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the British Museum in London and the National Museum in Berlin.
