Vintage Art Deco Blue John 925 Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace British Hallmark:

Despite its name, the dominant color of Blue John is a dark purple. This Art Deco era sterling silver pendant has hallmarks on its back and I can make out a British lion, but I am uncertain as to the rest of it.
The pendant is strung on a sturdy and somewhat fancy chain which is also marked for sterling silver. It is 16 inches, measured from end to end. The Blue John stone does have surface cracks, but this is not due to wear. This is how this relatively rare stone was harvested. There never was much of it so Derbyshire miners and jewellers typically made the most of the ore that they did manage to find.
Modern pieces of Blue John jewelry incorporate only wafer thin slices of the ore. Sothe vintage (solid) Blue John jewelry is sought after, particularly the chevron patterned pieces of purple and yellow (like the earrings in my other listing) seen in jewelry produced during the 1920s and 1930s.
