The name ¨Rinconada¨comes from the first workshop that Suso and Javier Carbajales had, which was located in a garage, just in the ¨cul-d- sac¨ (dead-end) of Juan de Dios Peza street, in Montevideo – Uruguay.
In 1967 Jesús ( Suso) and Javier Carbajales built up a ceramic workshop giving ir the name “Rinconada”. Working in this workshop, and collaborating since its very beginning, was also Susana Braeckman (wife of Javier). They began designing Artesanía Rinconada figurines in 1967 that where sold to local gift shops in Uruguay. Sales abroad started initially in France and in the year 1970 they began to offer them in the United States.
In 1975 the twin brothers joined forces with Jorge De Rosa Thompson. Jorge was a ceramic professor and also owned a ceramic factory. De Rosa loved the collection and began to dedicate all his factory resources to aR production.
In the year of 1994 Artesania Rinconada’s production was split in two factories. That of Jorge De Rosa Thompson and a Co-Op Factory controlled by the Carbajales brotheres; both located in Montevideo, Uruguay. In the 80s there were two more factories, one in Brazil and one in Argentina.
By 2002, Jorge De Rosa’s factory was only producing pieces under the name ¨De RosaRinconada Collections¨. According to the plan drawn up by De Rosa family, after 2003 the factory produces only pieces of the ¨De Rosa Collection¨, ending the original society with the Carbajales brothers (Artesanía Rinconada). In 2004, the Co-Op Factory of the twin brothers (Artesanía Rinconada), definitively closed his doors; Artesanía Rinconada mass production came to an end.Our Story:
Artesania Rinconada – Heritage–story is above all one of legacy.
Back in 2003, Giampiero and Gianfranco Musso brothers began a business relationship with Jorge De Rosa Thompson, co-founder of Artesanía Rinconada S.r.l [LLC] – Uruguay. Together they proceeded to catalog hundreds of pieces that make up the stock of prototypes, sample-collections, artist proof, one of kind pieces and variations, accumulated along more than 33 years. Additionally, for 9 years, we developed a great work of research and acquisition of aR pieces that belonged to private collections in Uruguay and Argentina. Most of these pieces belong to former aR craftsmen and artists, allowing the Musso brothers befriends two generations of ex-workers of Artesanía Rinconada. During these years, the Musso brothers were directly involved in the design and production of more than 120 prototypes.
Pieces belonging to the stock of old factories, such as those were prototypes or proofs of talented artists, are now part of important private collections around the world.
The last years of manufacturing in Uruguay, were years of joy and sorrow, of working hands, clay, brushes, ovens, skills and dreams. There were also conflicts of money, love, vices, politics and ego. The doors were closed to any possibility of continuing the legacy of Artesania Rinconada Crafts; a form of artistic expression that was already part of the national wealth, and, above all, they represent the passion of many artists, potters and craftsmen.
A few people, who have contributed to the creation and dissemination of heritage, decided to continue the work started by the Carbajales twins brothers in a small garage back in 1967.
In 2013 the Musso brothers, along with a small group of artists, craftsmen and potters, who had also worked at one of the, now extinct, Uruguayan Artesania Rinconada (aR)factories, obtained the registration of the trademark in the United States. It was the first step of a cherished plan to keep alive the legacy of Artesanía Rinconada. Then, in 2014, our workshop ¨Rinconada Studio – Uruguay¨ reached an agreement with one of the few well known American Pottery Art Factory, located in a small town in Texas, USA .
In late 2015 we launch the first production in the U.S.A and in 2017 our first production of Critters Made in Perú.
All current aR pieces carry the Artesania Rinconada trademark , adhering to the near half-century-old traditions of the original Urguayan craftmanship, the near half-century tradition of thePeruvian Art Pottery. We now share our passion and our pottery living heritage.
Living Heritagecan be defined as a collection of practices, traditions, expressions, skills, and knowledge that are passed from one generation to the next. This understanding forms a complex system of knowledge that is unique to a particular population within a specific geographical area.– UNESCO, 2007Design in Uruguay since 1976 – Now handmadein Peru and the US.
Artesanía Rinconada, represents the combined artistic expressions, skills and knowledge that come from three different Pottery living heritage: Peruvian, American and Uruguayan.Living Heritagecan neither be bought nor owned; it can only be inherited. It is universal, it has to be shared and is greatly cherished.
