Mid 20th Century

Old Aboriginal bark painting from Port Keating, Australia. Pigments on curved bark. Unsigned but by or in the style of Charley Rock Ngumbe. Mid 20th century.

Notations to the reverse in black ink or marker and white chalk. Depicting two Jabiru birds dancing, trees, and other symbols including spears and other implements. Silver pigment is used for the tiny spots on the birds and in other places.

NOTES: Charlie Rock Ngumbe was one of the founding members of the Port Keating school of Aboriginal painting and was born in 1911. He was active during the 1950’s on and died in the 1990’s.

CONDITION:

Good overall condition with some light wear to the edges. No prior restoration. With original strengthening thin strip of binding material running horizontally across the width of the back.
