Description - This is a Stupendous vintage sterling silver necklace that was hand wrought in Mexico, circa 1930\'s to late 1940\"s. This is masterfully crafted in a sculptural, artistic motif that has a great art deco look. It is an elegant and classical design which consists of a multitude of thick silver repousse pendants. These pendants are ever so gently curved and have five graduated sizes of demi spheres that are framed on one side with braided silver wirework. Repoussage is a silver working technique in which a malleable metal(such as sterling silver) is shaped or ornamented by hammering from the reverse or under side. This technique is extremely time consuming. The links are connected by silver rings which allows the necklace to lay gracefully on the neck. This is a dramatic piece that looks spectacular when worn and sure to be noticed. What an addition to any silver collection!
Size - The necklace is 17-1/2\" long when closed and 1-3/8\" wide. Weight is approximately 106 grams.
Hallmarked - Simply marked \"Silver, Mexico\" as much of the very early Mexican jewelry was marked. This piece is at least 925 sterling but is most likely a higher grade. Much of the early Mexican jewelry was a higher grade as it was easier to work with especially the repousse work.
Condition - Excellent vintage condition. The silver has acquired a wonderful, soft patina that reflects the shadows created by the depth of the designs. No dings or dents to the silverwork (one of the smaller demi spheres has a slight impression place - on the eighth pendant from the clasp which is not visible or noticeable when worn). The clasp is a silver foldover locking clasp that works perfectly. There are minor surface scratches consistent with normal wear and age as with all vintage Mexican silver. (see photos)
