Click to View Image Album Measuring 45 cm in length (17.75 in.) this heavy possibly red wood Fijian Cannibal Fork or I-culanibokola was said to have been traditionally used in the pre-missionary days by attendants to feed hunks of roasted human flesh to priests and chiefs who were forofferden by taboo from touching the food themselves.

While certainly not a pre-missionary fork this ornately carved and hemp or other fiber wrapped handle is a beautiful specimen that is quite true to similar artifacts in various museums and private collections of 19th century examples. Our example was purchased by the estate in Fiji sometime in the late 19970s or early 1980s.

Replicas of these understandably popular artifacts have been carved by Fijian crafts people since at least the 1880s for the ever greater tourist trade.
