Snake Eyes: The first 40

My mission was a fairlydifficult one: obtain every one of the first 41 Snake Eyes 3 ¾” figures Hasbroproduced. From the all black straight-armed toy made in 1982 to the gear-ladensuper-articulated action figure produced 27 years later, I eventually got themall. It turns out that some of these figures are quite rare. For example, “Snake-Eyes(v16) was released as an exclusive pack-in premium with the G.I. Joe: TheOriginal Mini-Series released by Kid Rhino in 2003. The production run for thisfigure was 25,000 units.” (source: YoJoe.com) Additionally, Hasbro hasseldom been known to price their products on the low end of the action figure /toy market. Indeed, adding each of the first 41 versions of Snake Eyes to one’scollection by purchasing every carded figure, multi-pack, playset, boxed set,DVD combo, or anything else containing Snake Eyes at the retail level wouldhave come with an impressive price tag. Today, assembling this collectionpiecemeal, and largely from sources in the secondary market is, predictably, evenmore expensive.

In this collection, I havecreated for each figure a customized data sheet. This small document is acompilation of images and a summary of information including the figure’s yearand wave of release, the type of package it was sold in (and with which othercharacters), as well as a section identifying each of accessories that camewith the figure, complete with detailed images of each to assist the collector.This information is freely available at yojoe.com—widely recognized as the mostcomprehensive and respected Joe resource on the net. I simply chose for eachcustomized data sheet the portions of informationv(from Yojoe.com) I felt werethe most relevant or interesting. I then condensed each one into a convenientlysized document and included them with their respective figure as a reference.

As for condition…

The internet is a beautifulthing. Without resources like Amazon and , this project never would havebeen feasible, from a logistical point of view if nothing else. But withregards to quality, I was pleasantly surprised to find that many sellers hadfigures which were essentially pristine. Sometimes the figures had been displayedbriefly, sometimes they were kept sealed on their original card or in theiroriginal box set, sometimes they were still resting in their factory bubble,and I suspect that a few had even been <gasp!> played with. In the acquisitionof each Snake Eyes version, I attempted to locate the finest example of thatparticular loose figure I could find—regardless of cost. The result is acollection which largely consists of pieces which are Mint or Near Mint.Certainly every figure in this collection is worthy of consideration forprofessional AFAgrading.

None of the figures are broken,or have any broken or missing body pieces. It is possible that some of the older figures havenew O-Rings, butI didn\'t take \'em apart.Each weapon and accessoryhas been dutifully inspected to ensure that it is original, authentic, and is acorrect match to each specific version of Snake Eyes. Each figure also has itscorrect file card in a cool protective case (a couple versions’ file cards wereapparently part of the removable/discardable packaging itself so are notnecessary to consider the figure “Complete”, as is the case with shared weaponsin a multi-pack) No reproductionweapons, accessories, or file cards will be found in this collection.

Storage/Packaging-

Each figure comes in its own “VersionPacket.” These are generally durable and clear poly (polyethylene) bags, andtypically have a ziplock top for convenience. Each packet contains all of theitems relevant to its enclosed unique Snake Eyes figure version.

Data Sheet- (Described above,with photo of the figure, it’s version number, accessories, etc.)

File Card- An actual, authenticG.I. Joe file card that has been removed from the figure’s original packaging.“Filecards are printed inserts or attachments that came with most G.I. Joeaction figures. It is the profile information of the character.” (source: gijoe.wikia.com). Each file card has been placed inside a new crystalclear plastic holder for protection. The file card is easily removed ifdesired. Two of the figures do not include file cards.

Clamshell Case- Each version ofSnake Eyes figure has been kept in its own plastic clamshell for protection.These clear plastic one-piece foldable units vary in size, and their halves lockinto one another forming a sort of bubble for the figure, its accessories,weapons, and display stands (when applicable). Not only does this allow for theeasy handling and close inspection of each Snake Eyes figure without the riskof damage or wear, it also prevents the often small and potentially delicateaccessories from getting lost or broken. I only used durable, high quality,collectors’ grade soft figure cases, which can be opened and closed many, manytimes to remove and replace the figure for play, display, etc.. In someinstances, a second clamshell may be included in the packet. This is typicallyfor large accessory items or companion animals which require more space thanthe figure’s own clamshell can accommodate. As an example, Timber (Snake Eyes’Wolf Companion) came packaged with several versions of Snake Eyes. Timber isone big, bad wolf! Timber gets his own clamshell.

Personal Notes- Some figures maycontain a small piece of paper with some brief handwritten details about thespecific Snake Eyes figure version. I thought it would be interesting to sharethe notes from my initial research and progress as the collection grew, so youmay find a couple. Also, these notes serve as an excellent backup/reminder ofwhich figure version goes back inside which clamshell should one decide to takemany figures out of their packets at once!
