Vintage Wood Base Glass Domed Gold Gilt Religious CRUCIFIX
Up for sale is a striking metal Crucifix figurineon a round wood base covered by a thick glass dome. The metal sculpture is three-dimensional andmade of a very light non-magnetic grey metal with gold gilt coloring. The base may be brass. There are some spots where the gold gilt isworn. The detail is fine and depicts thevarious symbols of Christ\'s Passion, including the skulls and bones, chalice,spear, mop, ladder, crossed swords, lantern, whip, crowing cock, and dice. Thereare many symbols referencing the passion of Jesus. The cock that crowed, fulfilling Jesus\'prophecy that Peter would deny Him three times. The hanging lantern represents that Jesus isthe Light of the World. The hanging whiprepresents the flogging of Jesus. Thecup symbolizes the last supper. Thepitcher held vinegar. The entire piece stands approximately 11” tall. The blackpainted wood base is 5 ¼” x 1 3/8” and sits on three feet. There is the number four stamped on thebottom of the rough sawn wood. The crossis approximately 8 7/8” tall and the brass base is 3 3/8” diameter. The glass dome is 9 ½” tall and 4” indiameter with the thickness of glass to be close to 1/8”.There are some chips on the rim of dome and several scratches on the outside of glass. There is a band of red fussy material wheninserted into the wood base helps buffer the glass dome in the base. Three small nails help hold the Crucifix inplace with one being replaced. I am notan expert in antiques so will not say an exact date or place manufacturer because itis not marked. I am unsure of itsage.It will make a nice addition to acollection.
