This is a unique hand carved elephant stand/table. I purchased this piece from the nephew of a retired US Army Captain who toured many countries including South Africa during the 1950\'s and 1960\'s. The nephew inherited his uncle\'s estate. The cute stand is hand carved from one solid piece of African, ribbon grained mahogany. The base of the stand measures 19 1/2\" long by 7\" wide. The stand is 16 1/2\" tall. The top surface is 11 1/2\" long by 10\" wide with slanted corners. The stand is heavy and weighs just under 20 pounds!! This stand is very stable and would be lovely used to hold a large plant. It has some black residue on the surface indicating that some one over the years might have painted it black, then someone else removed the paint, but not thoroughly. both tusks have suffered some loss due to, most probably, a dog or cat chewing on them!! I tried to show the damage in the photos. I have owned and operated my own bricks and mortar antiques store for more than 26 years and have collected antiques for more than 40 years.
