Vintage Military Metal Box - may have come off a 1945 Harley Motorcycle. ???
Here\'s the story..... First, I\'m NOT a motorcycle guy. Several years ago I stopped at a yard sale where a family was helping a WW II veteran clear out his garage. He had several Army items that he had picked up from near the end of WW II or within the following few years. This item was included among them. He said he purchased a surplus 1945 Army Harley Davidson motorcycle in the late 40\'s and this box was on the bike. He thought it once held a small folding jack but couldn\'t recall for sure. He didn\'t need it so he took it off the bike and it was in his garage ever since. (The bike is long gone). It is steel...weighs 3 pounds and has brackets & bolts on the back where it looks like it was made to bolt onto something. Its also painted in Olive drab that looks legit for Army use from that time. It\'s 7 1/2\" tall, 4\" deep and 4 1/4\" wide. Has a hinged lid with a small metal latch. No markings.
Since then when I\'ve run across anyone who professed to know about older Harley parts I\'ve tried to figure out if this really was a Harley component or not. Some have said yes...some have said no...and most don\'t know one way or the other. The best positive account I\'ve heard was from another Army WW II vet who said it was from a Harley bike...but it was not a standard issue item. He said that in the \"Recon\" company of his unit there was one \"Scout\" Platoon who had Harley bikes...and each bike carried an \"extra\" item or two in addition to their standard gear. This box was likely something maybe one or two bikes would have to carry something like a jack or other repair tools that was not in the \"kidney\" shaped tool boxes that came with each bike. Whether it was actually made by Harley or something that the G.I.\'s improvised on their own...he didn\'t know. He said he knew that the Canadians also had some Harleys and they also put extra stuff on the bikes. So that\'s a possibility too....but I really don\'t know for sure.
I\'ve had this sitting in my garage long enough...time to put it out there and see if anyone has an answer...I\'d like to know....and to move it along to someone who has a use for it. Thanks!
