Historic, Original Harry Zitter Oil Painting on board. Dated 1942.Zitter is a New York Artist, native of Flatbush 1898 - 1989. His subjects often depicted Jewish life.This painting depicts a Jewish Orthodox man, studying Torah. He is covered in a Prayer Shawl and is wrapped in Phylacteries. A Star of David over his right shoulder seems to enlighten his earnest study. The colors are deep and reflective. The size is 9 1/2 by 13 1/2. Harry (Henry) Zitter (1898 – 1989)
Harry Zitter was a native of the Flatbush section of Brooklyn in New York City. His paintings depict the urban realist subjects of the Orthodox Jewish communities in these New York neighborhoods.
There is a presence of light hearted humor in many of Zitter’s paintings. He often used Rabbis, street peddlers, mothers with babies and old men as subjects to form his canvases around but never making these compositions sad or depressing.
