This is a listing for a vintage sterling silver and natural turquoise pendant hand wrought by Navajo silversmith Angela Lee and hallmarkedwith her stamp on the back. It features an extremely valuable natural turquoise stone from the Stormy Mountain mine, now closed, in Nevada.
Condition: It\'s in excellent vintage condition with no damage. There is an age related, extremely shallow, surface only fissure on the turquoise which I\'ve tried to show with a couple of flash photos. It\'s difficult to see when enlarged and not visible to the naked eye, and as mentioned, is caused from the naturalaging of the stone, and not damage. The stone is extremely tight in it\'s mounting. And the mounting is in perfect condition, with a very warm undisturbed agedpatina. The bail is well-made with a thick terminal soldered to the back, that can\'t break off.
Dimensions: Extra large size with a length of 2 and 3/16th inches and a width of 1.5 inches. It weighs 14.7 grams. The stone is 1 and 7/8th inches in length and .75 inchesacross it\'s widest section…so a very generous sized stone.Style: The pendant was made in an enhancer style where the bail is open, so it can hook over any size beaded necklace withouthaving to clear the beads. The stone was left in a free form shape and mounted in a deep smooth bezel. The accents are traditional with a fine twisted rope of sterling that encircles the base and curled wires, some straight and some twisted that frame the stone. A nicely detailed squash blossom and feather finish the accents.
Stone: The stone is a rare example ofhigh-grade Stormy Mountain turquoise. The turquoise from this mine has a blotched matrix that gives the impression of storm clouds. The matrix is seen in blacks and browns, but the very best, rarest and highest grade material has a medium to dark blue turquoise and an orange spiderwebbed matrix, which is perfectly demonstrated in this piece. It\'salways been considered to be some of the best turquoise in Nevada. The mine\'s closing increased it\'s value even more.
The Navajo artist Angela Lee is obviously a master silversmith and has created an elegant and beautiful setting for this rare stone.
