This beautiful MAKENGEbasket lid was made by theMbunda womenafter fleeing from Angola toZimbabwe.There they continued to make their traditional baskets from the root of themakenge plant.

The basket lid, long separated from the basket, has a renewed popularity as a ethnically decorative focal point when displayed on a wall, or put to use as a unique tray/plate.

Measuring almost 12\" in diameter this lid is traditionally colored in tones of natural, brown, rust, burgundy and charcoal. The lid interior colors are still quite vibrant. (see photos).

This is an estate piece from a collection of antique and vintage hand woven baskets whose origins are split between Africa and North America. The estate inventory notes indicate that this was originally purchased in the late 1930\'s.
