VINTAGE 1904 PATTERN MCCLELLAN CAVALRY SADDLE

For sale is an antique 1904 pattern McClellan militarysaddle. This is NOT a reproduction but anoriginal production military saddle. This saddle is in very goodcondition. While this pattern wasmanufactured in russet leather, this particular example was treated withneatsfoot oil at some point in its history and it is now a darker brown color. Theseams and stitching are tight with no separation. All the hardware is original. Two rivets are missing from the rear strapbehind the candle. The circular leatherplate that mounts the chinch ring appears to have been replaced. While that particular piece is not original,it is a good and faithful representation of the original. The stirrups are wooden with leather hoodsembossed with the oval US markings.Theembossing is relatively sharp and crisp, very legible and it stands out on thehood of the stirrup. The stirrups aremarked inside the hoods, with the initials “W.S. 18” and “F.C.L.” The leather,while showing use on both saddle and rigging straps, is still supple and good. Thesaddle is marked on the right rear skirt “S&R” and beneath that an initialthat is unrecognizable followed by the initials “C.L.” The leather seat of the saddle is split freebut there is some minor crinkling in one spot and some very small pit marks inanother place. It has two coat straps included.These coat straps are reproductions made from original harnessbuckles. There is minimal sheepskin liningon the underside of the saddle.

The saddle has no cinch. (Available in reproduction.) This saddle waspurchased over 30 years ago from a militaria collector and it has been ondisplay as a part of my personal western/military collection since thattime. It has been in a smoke-free,climate controlled Environment. It hasbeen treated over the years with quality leather conditioners. It cleans up nicely. The saddle isserviceable. I have ridden this saddlefor pleasure and for military re-enactments. I use and recommend a high quality saddle pad ifit is ridden.

This is a fine, clean, and serviceable McClellan suitable fordisplay or historic use. The saddle isnot mint, but it is an honest-to-goodness antique of exceptional quality givenits age. It is offered for salebecause of retirement down-sizing. Idon’t think you would be disappointed to own this piece of history. I’d like to see this go to a good home.
