Size 69 x 92 mm.weight 160gold SAINT FO CHILDRENSaint George (Greek: Γεώργιος (Georgios), Classical Syriac: ܓܝܘܪܓܝܣ (Giwargis), Latin: Georgius; c. 275/281 – 23 April 303 AD), born in Lydda, Roman Palestine, was a soldier in the Roman army and was later venerated as a Christian martyr. His father was Gerontius, a Greek Christian from Cappadocia, and an official in the Roman army. His mother, Polychronia was a Christian from Roman Palestine.
Saint George became an officer in the Roman army in the Guard of Diocletian. In hagiography, Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic (Western and Eastern Rites), Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, and the Oriental Orthodox churches. He is immortalized in the tale of Saint George and the Dragon and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. His memorial is celebrated on 23 April (May 06), and he is regarded as one of the most prominent military saints. Many Patronages of Saint George exist around the world, including: Georgia, England, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Russia and Syria, as well as the cities of Genoa, Amersfoort, Beirut, Botoşani, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Timişoara, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg im Breisgau, Kragujevac, Kumanovo, Ljubljana, Pérouges, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lydda, Lviv, Barcelona, Moscow and Victoria, as well as of the Scout Movement[4] and a wide range of professions, organizations, and disease sufferers including leprosy, plague, herpes and syphilis.Use: Such primitively manufactured sand cast brass travelling icons were mass produced in 17th -19th centuries and intended to be displayed in the homes of the Russian Orthodox believers — particularly popular among the Old Believers.History: Cast metal icons and crosses were inexpensive, durable and portable objects of veneration in Orthodox Russia. Brass crosses and icons depicting saints, Christ and the Virgin adorned every Russian family’s “beautiful corner”—the place in each home designated for spiritual devotions. In the middle of the 17th century a great split occurred in the Russian Orthodox Church over changes made to the liturgy. This resulted in large factions breaking away from the state sponsored church. Because of the oppression from the official Church and the government, a group known as the “Old Believers” favored the use of cast metal icons and set up workshops throughout the countryside devoted to the production of these religious items. Despite a decree by Peter the Great in 1723 that forbade the production and sale of cast metal icons, they continued being made until the late nineteenth century
