Vintage Plycraft Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman:
$700.00

Thank you for your interest in this early 80\'s Plycraft Eames lounge chair and ottoman.
Shipping: The chair & ottoman ship free to destinations served by Greyhound Freight. Otherwise the buyer is responsible for either picking up the chair or making arrangements for shipping--it is already boxed. If your carrier wants to handle the chair assembled, I will reassemble it.The comfort and satisfaction I have derived from this chair transcends anything I would have thought possible from what is just an inanimate object. It is now ready to do the same for one of a younger generation.
The materials are Rosewood and full-grain leather ie it shows both the natural markings (scars, etc.) and color. The chair is in very nice, but not pristine, condition--I bought it 1983 from Macy\'s in Stanford Shopping Center and have used it approximately 12 of those intervening years:
The Pros
  • The veneer is in very nice condition.
  • The leather is still very supple and beautiful except as noted below.
  • The critical hardware ie the bolts that hold the bottom of the chair to the lumbar section have all been replaced.
  • The tilt mechanism is brand new and superior to the one it replaced--it has been tilted less than a dozen times.
  • In summary, I believe the chair to be structurally stronger than it was when it was new.
The Cons
  • There are two distinct defects in the chair veneer: Between the upper left bolt in Pic #3 and the right edge of the lumbar section, a little piece chipped off--only half of it was replaced and the rest is filled in with wood putty. For the 2nd defect, if you look at the upper left screw in the lower section of the chair shown in Pic #2, you will see a little streak pointing down and to the right--it is the same type defect as the one above except in this case the whole chip was replaced.
  • The bolts, except for those holding the arm rests, were successively tightened over about 5 days. While this makes for a very strong chair, it risks creating fractures of the veneer around the edges of the washers. To prevent fracturing, I applied a very thin clear epoxy around all of the bolt washers. If you look closely at those areas from certain angles, you can see the epoxy. I also applied the epoxy to a small area on the rear edge of the bottom of the chair that was beginning to delaminate.
  • There are some areas of discoloration of the leather that occurred that occurred during storage. I applied an expensive color restoring product. While it did a nice job of recoloring, the color match turned out less than perfect. (That product will be enclosed with the chair.) If you look between the buttons of the last photo, you can see what I am talking about. (The overall color of the leather is much better reflected in the other pics.) Also, in that area there is a tiny fracture of the leather, like maybe an eight of an inch long. I am not aware of any other breaks in the leather.
  • The bases were chrome plated. When I tried to clean up the little bit of erosion, I went right through the the chrome plating. Not being able to repair that, I was left with painting. After several tries, I settled on black which I actually prefer to the chrome.
  • The original Carriage head bolts were replaced with Button head allen sockets--a loss of the clean aesthetics of carriage head in exchange for greater strength.

Returns: 90 days as long as the chair and ottoman are received in the same condition as it was when it shipped. The buyer pays the cost of the return shipping.
Guarantee: A one year warranty on the bases and the new tilt mechanism. (I don\'t see how the remainder of the chair could fail absent serious abuse.) The buyer could either return chair for full refund, if it is otherwise undamaged, or have the seller be responsible for replacing the failed parts.
