In most cases the pieces offered for sale on are from the business inventory (the business has been based in the Washington, D.C. area for many years). The art and collectibles that we are offering to buyers are special and unique pieces that have been carefully “curated” by us.This vintage Sunbonnet Sue quilt panel has been framed in a modern oak frame. Presumably, this is one of at least two surviving sections of a quilt by SMS done in 1951. (We own a second framed panel, and we are also listing it.)
The background is ivory. Her dress is ivory with little pink spots / dots --- that have faded -- and her bonnet, sleeve and shoes are pink. All of the embroidered lines are dark brown. (On this panel, the artist did not embroider Sue\'s hands -- as she did on her other quilt panel that we have listed.) Everything is entirely hand stitched and hand quilted.

The backing paper is a very nice printed paper (rust and tan). There is a metal zigzag hook along the top edge of the frame for hanging.
The old quilt panel is in good used vintage condition. It is faded, and there is wear (for example, note the bottom of her skirt just above her shoes). There is one little brown dot to the left of her skirt. Obviously, it got worn / faded / discolored (etc.) from use and handling when it was still one of many panels on a quilt (before it became a framed textile work of art). It was signed and dated by the artist; SMS \'51 is embroidered at the lower right.
This genuine vintage quilt panel is certainly American. If you value the authentic and the real, it is preferable to decorate with the \"real McCoy\" rather than a MADE IN CHINA reproduction of American crafts, vintage textiles and folk art (and we have seen several fake Sunbonnet quilt panels in several department stores and discount stores recently).
